On Friday, May 18th, my box, CrossFit 310, celebrated its second anniversary with its family and their friends. Last year I unfortunately couldn’t make so this year I made it a point to be in attendance. And I’m so glad I did, it turned out great! There are so many reasons why we were all there.
Family.
One thing that I love about our box is the family. We’ve all become each others family in one way or another. From those of us who have known each other since the beginning (ahem, girl fight) to those who have been here only a couple weeks, Unlike some other boxes that I have been to, we make it a point to be very welcoming to the newbies. Think back to when you first began. Specially those who know no one coming in, like I was when I started two years ago. Those with no athletic background. All these people need the support and reassurance that we all began somewhere. That there is always a goal for anyone, even the “elite” athletes at the gym. And I think our box does amazing at this.
Friends.
It’s clear many of us have become a family through this little thing called CrossFit. But, another perk to this, is the friends we’ve come out with. I have countless memories of WOD-ing with people I consider very close friends. Beyond that, I have amazing memories of doing things outside of the gym. Whether it’s something as simple as going to dinner, or meeting at a friends place for a bite, or going out and doing very non=paleo things. Just let loose with them. These are the friends that see you at your worst (or best, however you want to look at it) when a WOD is just beating you down and you’re sweating like an insane beast with a dab of delirium. They understand.

The push.
Like the CrossFit Games Facebook so eloquently put it, this is the only sport where the loudest cheers happen for the person finishing last. We push each other, push each other hard. In those moments when you just want to quit. When your body is just telling you, “No more,” is when we all step in and push you. This is a big reason why I personally feel the need to be in a box, rather than home WODs. I like and I crave that motivation, that push.
The competition.
Let’s face it. Most of us who continue to CrossFit have a competitive bone or three in us. We want to beat that person next to us. We all look at the white board to see what time and weight to beat - well, except us 6 am-ers, there is no one before us, so we must set the bar. We scope out everyone’s numbers and from that gauge who to chase. I personally have a little list of those I chase or try to set the bar for - here’s to you Brittny Burford, Helen Medina, and Carrie Rey.

Koach.
One of my favorite people, ever. When I was going through a rough time of not making it to class on time or at all because of my new job, he was extremely understanding. It was a dark time for me. It honestly affected me a lot not being able to regularly CrossFit for nearly eight months. Outsiders would ask me why I don’t just go to a different CrossFit box, one that’s closer to Santa Monica or on my commute home to make it on time. Why? Because I did not want to be coached by anyone else. Because I consider those I CrossFit with, family and dear friends. Because I love the culture of CrossFit 310 and of my Koach. Because he has been so helpful with my stupid knee problem, determined to get it better with me. Because he’s a goof ball and kind of a spaz. Because he deeply cares about every single one of us.
Thank you CrossFit 310. You’re a game changer.

2012 5K Color Run - Orange County
This was literally the happiest 5k I have ever done. I’ve done my share of mud runs, which are always fun - running around in mud is always fun. But this was so…colorful. To start, they give everyone a color packet of colored powder to use at the end with everyone at the same time. At every K, you are doused in a color, so by the end you are colorfully covered head to toe - unless you were a pansy and stayed in the middle to avoid being hit. Would do this again in a heart beat.
In other news, my knee wasn’t too pleased that I decided to do a 5K. I can be a stupid girl. My Koach would agree.
Lunch Nom
Check out what this lucky girl had for lunch today. Meaty deliciousness and seasonal salad on a fancy rectangular plate.
Although I am not much of a Westside girl (just don’t think I can live here) - but I do work here - I do like that they usually don’t bat an eyelash when you make requests like no bread/bun or rice, etc. They’re used to it I’m sure.
This was originally a Philly Cheese Steak (grand cru gruyère, aged white cheddar, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers) sandwich that I kindly requested without bun, even adding, “If it’s possible”, being used to judgment or blank stares - but my request was granted without side eyes. This bunless beauty was served with a side seasonal salad (pear, feta, sun-dried tomatoes and cucumber).
Oh me? Have been MIA because I’ve traveled back to 1966.
Or, life got a kung fu grip on me. As life would have it, I’ve been working a lot and trying to play as much as I work. Fear not, I have been diligently going to CrossFit as well. But, let’s play a quick catch up game to see where I’m at now.
I now have a PR for kipping at 16. Number three on the leaderboard. So close to 20 that I can taste it. To serve as a reminder, my Koach’s rule is that once you get to 20 consecutive kips, you can work on butterfly kipping.
Eating has not been too bad but I will admit that as of recent I have felt the need to cut back on my craft beer intake. Thanks to my brother I have become a beer snob (Hello Belgium brew, my love) but in turn, I feel I’m starting to get bit puffy from it.
New people and people that have been in my life for some time, never cease to surprise me. Whether it’s good or bad, though, is debatable.
Clean and jerk PR of 115lbs today! Awesome way to start the day. Attempted 120lbs but had a mental block of sorts and failed. Next time.

This is just what I needed after nonstop weekend plans. To wind down with this nomilicious cage-free egg omelet, uncured bacon, and avocado combo.
So don’t go bacon my heart,
I won’t go bacon your heart,
Don’t go bacon my heart!
THIS.

Fear not Tumblr, I have not run off into the sunset. Life has merely been keeping me busy. I figured I’d make up for it by showing you the ribeye steak that I made with a baked sweet potato and sautéed garlic spinach.
And also, again fear not, I have been consistently going to CrossFit, too. And loving it still to this day.
On this edition of quick and easy meals for the days you don’t feel like cooking or are on-the-go, I present you…wait for it…Trader Joe’s Ready Made Grilled Chicken Strips, one nuked plantain and half an avocado, all in one lovely red bowl.
Can I just say, hallelujah! Koach and I are testing and easing me into using my knee again. I was able to join in the WOD with everyone on Friday and today. Over the weekend, my knee felt okay, not worst, which is a good sign post WOD. I’m excited we’re making progressions to get me back into it all, but I feel…inadequate. Perhaps that’s the wrong word. Impatient? Antsy? Frustrating? Yes, those work better.
I feel like a team player again, as opposed to my Lonely WOD’s which can be depressing because I don’t get to play with everyone. But I feel held back and that frustrates me. And I know Koach can see it, which is why he reminds me why we’re taking it slow. Needless to say, I’ve been reminded of my failure at Open Games WOD 12.3. I was toying with the idea of doing the last Open Games WOD, Koach sensed that, and he rightfully advised against it. Had he not said anything, I might have gone for it. Getting right back into RX-ing WOD’s has not gone well for me, so this is a a safer approach. I get that. Doesn’t mean I like it.
Today, for example, strength skill were back squats, I was told to use a hard target (small box) so that I ensure that I’m using just booty to bring myself up rather than quads and knees. I haven’t had to use a target since my early days of CrossFit. The WOD included OH squats, and I again had to use a hard target. There were also burpees in the WOD. I almost have to retrain my brain to make sure that I am landing on my heels when coming back in, rather than my toes - which is what is hard on my knees.
I have to constantly remind myself that this is the road to recovery that I have to take and not get mad at the fact that I can’t chase those I usually chase or try to beat everyone’s time…just yet. Koach even said to me, “Today’s not the day you try to beat everyone’s time,” but rather that I need to focus on my movements.
The competitor in me has trouble with this. But getting my knee all better trumps the urge. I will follow Koach’s orders.
